Bernie Sanders distanced himself from Paul Song's "Democratic Whores" comment
Bernie Sanders distanced himself from Lisa Ling’s husband, Dr. Paul Y. Song, “Democratic Whores” comment.
Sanders tweeted, “Dr. Song’s comment was inappropriate and insensitive. There’s no room for language like that in our political discourse.”
During an event in New York on Wednesday night, Song commented that Democrats who support big insurance companies and the lobbyists who lobby for them are “democratic whores.”
Song told the crowd, “Secretary Clinton has said Medicare for all will never happen. Well, I agree with Secretary Clinton that Medicare for all will never happen if we have a president who never aspires for something greater than the status quo.
Medicare for all will never happen, if we continue to elect corporate democratic whores who are beholden to Big Pharma and the private insurance industry instead of us.”
By early Thursday morning, #DemocraticWhores was trending on twitter. The response to Song’s comment was mixed.
Casandra Fairbanks tweeted that “Clinton is the epitome of a corporate whore,” while Kimberlee Cline tweeted that it is “insulting” to “whores” when they’re compared “to politicians.”
Kaivan Shroff, however, took a different view. She tweeted that Song’s comment is evidence of “underlying sexism” in Sanders’ campaign.
Recognizing the big blunder that he made, Song wrote a lengthy apology on Huffington Post website: “…there is no excuse for my poor judgment in using this word. The backlash has been swift and harsh, and rightfully so. To all fellow Americans who I have offended, I apologize to each of you too.”
